Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark

Inaugurated in 2009, the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark covers an area of 50 km2 across parts of the Eastern and Northeastern New Territories. It is made up of eight Geo-Areas distributed across the Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region and Northeast New Territories Sedimentary Rock Region. At the Geopark, visitors will be able to enjoy Hong Kong’s timeless and rare but beautiful landforms.

Port Island is a place of red earth. Sedimentary rocks are of significance here, especially at Bluff Head where the Devonian sandstones, mudstones and conglomerates are the oldest rocks in Hong Kong, dating from around 400 million years ago. Red earth landscapes are called “Danxia” in Mainland China. Port Island is the number one representative in Hong Kong.
